CBD: one of the buzz words of the cannabis seed industry over the last few years. With more and more emphasis highlighting the medicinal benefits of the CBD cannabinoid we all have seen seedbanks fast to capitalise on promoting and creating high CBD strains. Seedbanks now having specific medical categories within their ranges, but how much of these benefits being touted are true, and to what extent are we being subjected to a mass marketing campaign?
CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of at least 85 cannabinoids found in cannabis and is one of the most well-known. It is less psychoactive but is considered to have a considerably wider scope of medical applications than THC alone.
So what is a high CBD content in comparison to THC? You would be surprised to know that most seedbanks are actually classifying strains as medicinal with the implication that CBD levels will be high when in fact the average percentage appears to be between 0.5% and 1%.
When several of the large seedbanks have been questioned directly on the precise content of CBD in their strains, the resounding answer was “We haven’t actually had it tested it’s just a rough estimate on what it could be”. Some seedbanks even refused to be interviewed on the subject. Some seedbanks have been refreshingly candid and Franco from Greenhouse is quoted as saying “In our case a high CBD content means around 1%”.
The one exception to the story is CBD Crew (NOT CBD Seeds) who have actually had all strains lab tested and proven to be high in CBD, and when we say high we mean a minimum 4% not the average of 0.75% CBD found in other ‘Medical Strains’.
In past years the emphasis has been on THC levels and plants have been bred to offer a strong powerful high. Now the interest in CBD and the high medical benefits associated with CBD rich cannabis, mean it will take some time for the breeders to deliver the promises they are already marketing.
Freedom Seeds offer a CBD rich strain which we call FreeBD. This strain is marketed with a potential 8% THC/8% CBD. We have been told that one of our FreeBD plants was tested using gas chromatography analysis and was measured at 9% CBD.
